A Greener Way of Shopping – Think Reusable
In an effort to reduce the impact upon trees and because oil was relatively cheap, paper bags were phased out decades ago and in came the ubiquitous and admittedly convenient plastic bag. OK, it was a bit flimsy but strong enough for a one way trip from shop or department store to home. A huge advantage over the paper bag was that it did not disintegrate when rained upon and they became so cheap to produce by the million that nobody ever had to buy a plastic bag at the checkout – hey, you could take a bag for 20 separate items if you wanted. Shopping using something other than plastic bags to carry stuff home was never considered because there just wasn’t a good reason to change from such a convenient system. That was until the environmental impact of billions of used plastic bags came to the public attention.
What goes around comes around and I’m old enough to remember the time when my mother never went to the high street without her reusable old -fashioned shopping bag. Now, the concept of a reusable shopping bag made out of jute, cotton or canvas is seen as the solution to the extravagant use of plastic bags and the problem of their disposal. Many people have decided to shun the use of one-time use of plastic bags for shopping and invest in a reusable canvas shopping bag instead. They see it is one way they can play their part in protecting our precious planet from the detrimental impact of modern living, so why not join them and get your own reusable shopping bag. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at the number of styles there are for canvas shopping bags for example and once you’ve used one you won’t want to go back to the torture of having your hands strangled by those skinny plastic ‘handles’ of a disposable shopping bag.
